John Baker SLSA Obituay news

John Baker, a highly respected leader and passionate advocate for coastal safety, dedicated more than four decades of his life to surf lifesaving. His passing has left a profound void not only within the organization but throughout the broader lifesaving and emergency services community.

Appointed president of SLSA in 2021, Baker brought vision, humility, and a strong operational background to the role. He had previously served as president of Surf Life Saving South Australia and held multiple leadership positions within Brighton Surf Life Saving Club, where he began his volunteer service in his youth.

Baker was awarded the Emergency Services Medal (ESM) in recognition of his service during emergencies and was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant contribution to community safety and volunteerism. These honors reflected his tireless commitment to the cause of saving lives on Australian beaches.

In a statement, Surf Life Saving Australia paid tribute to Baker’s legacy:

“John was a dedicated surf lifesaver and leader who gave so much of himself to the movement. His passion, integrity, and service have saved countless lives and inspired thousands of volunteers. His passing is a great loss to us all.”

Federal and state officials also expressed condolences, with the South Australian premier calling him “a true community hero whose leadership extended well beyond the sand.”

Under Baker’s stewardship, Surf Life Saving Australia navigated critical reforms, strengthened national coastal safety programs, and advanced diversity and inclusion across the organization. He was also instrumental in expanding training and resources for regional surf lifesaving clubs.

John Baker’s death has come as a shock to those who knew and worked closely with him. He is survived by his wife, children, and extended family, who have asked for privacy during this difficult time.

Flags at surf clubs across the country are being flown at half-mast, and a memorial service will be held in the coming days in Adelaide, where members of the lifesaving community will gather to honor his life and enduring legacy.
