The University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) Bluffton campus was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning after a nearby bank robbery prompted a large police response, according to the Bluffton Police Department.

Police said officers were called to the TD Bank located at 13 University Parkway (Route 112) for reports of an ongoing robbery. As a precaution, university officials ordered the campus to shelter in place while law enforcement searched the area.

In a statement, Bluffton Police said the lockdown was issued “out of an abundance of caution” while officers secured the scene and ensured the safety of students, faculty, and staff.

As of late Wednesday morning, police had not released details about the suspect or whether anyone was injured during the incident. Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies were observed in the area as the investigation unfolded.

USCB officials advised students and employees to remain indoors and await further instructions until authorities gave the all-clear. Notifications were sent through the university’s emergency alert system.

By early afternoon, police said the area was safe and the lockdown had been lifted. The investigation into the robbery remains ongoing.
