A violent incident late Sunday night has left two people dead and another critically injured in what police are now calling a murder-suicide.
Independence police say officers were dispatched to the Taylor Ridge Apartments on Regal Drive, just off Taylor Mill Road, at approximately 11:21 p.m. after reports of gunfire.
When officers arrived, they found 33-year-old Daylon Bradford outside the apartments suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Investigators say a man and woman fled into nearby woods shortly after the shooting. A perimeter was established, and K-9 units along with drones were deployed in the search.
Between 1:20 and 1:30 a.m. Monday, additional gunfire was heard, prompting police to call in a SWAT team. Shortly before 3 a.m., drones detected heat signatures in the woods, where officers later found two people dead.
The suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Donald Bryant, who police believe died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The female victim has been identified as 24-year-old Heavan Glison.
Authorities confirmed that Glison was no longer engaged to Bryant at the time of the shooting, though the exact nature of their relationship remains under investigation.
No officers were injured during the incident. Heavan was a single mother of two.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting. They are also asking the public to be on the lookout for a 1992 two-door white Honda Prelude with a black hood and Kentucky license plate SOG 514, believed to be connected to the case.
