The world of art and academia has lost one of its brightest lights with the passing of Stacy Isenbarger, a beloved professor of art and design at the University of Idaho, Acting Associate Dean of the College of Art & Architecture, and recipient of the 2021 Master Educator Award from FATE (Foundations in Art: Theory and Education). Stacy passed away in Moscow, Idaho, after a sudden illness resulting from a bone marrow infection. She was a native of Greenville, South Carolina, and made her home—and lasting impact—in the heart of Idaho’s artistic and academic community.
Stacy was more than an educator—she was a force of creative spirit. Her work, spanning sculpture, installation, and mixed media, defied boundaries and expectations. She approached art pedagogy with the same fierce curiosity and joy that she brought to her studio practice. Whether mentoring students, leading collaborative projects, or transforming everyday materials into evocative visual poetry, Stacy saw the world through a lens of deep care and wonder.
She was known for her ability to craft profound, moving pieces from the most unconventional items—cow vertebrae, fingernails, concrete camels, grape stems, and even crushed velvet roots. Each work was a reflection of her singular way of seeing—unexpected, daring, and breathtakingly honest.
In 2021, she was honored with FATE’s Master Educator Award, a testament to her decades of unwavering dedication to teaching and mentoring. But her legacy stretches far beyond accolades. She was a guiding presence in the classroom and studio, always willing to listen, share, and lift others up. She made her students feel not just seen but understood.
Her sister, Sarah Tighe, shared a moving tribute:
“To know Stacy was to love Stacy. She just had this way with people. She made everyone feel valued, heard, and loved. She was always there to help and share her ideas. She saw the world with artistic eyes and found beauty in the unexpected… Her pieces were a glimpse of how she saw the world, and they were beautiful. Just like her.”
Sarah continued:
“Today I had to say goodbye to my first best friend, my frumpbutt, my sister. I feel like a huge part of me is missing.”
Stacy Isenbarger was, to many, more than a professor—she was a mentor, a friend, a creative soulmate, and a sister in every sense of the word. She had an unmatched ability to bring people together, to see potential where others saw limitations, and to find light in the overlooked corners of the world.
Her absence leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of her family, colleagues, students, and the entire creative community she helped shape.
But her legacy—of art, of compassion, of imagination—lives on in every life she touched, and every piece she left behind.
